John Your Questions About Termite Pictures

John asks…

What would be a good headline for the topic “bulldozing a house with termites”?

I need this for homework. I have to create a news report about a picture of a house being bulldozed, so I thought why not a house with termites and with old age of 80 years.

Please Help!

admin answers:

It could have been an earwig (order dermaptera) look on google at pictures of this insect to see if its the same. These insects have pincers but they are found on the rear of the animal not the front. These insects are omnivorous and can destroy crops so I think they would probably eat wood as well.

There are also many different types of termites. Some of which have pincers too. So it may just be a termite that you don’t normally see.

Sharon Your Questions About Termite Pictures

Sharon asks…

What kind of bug is this?

We live in central Florida, in a house on the outskirts of Orlando. Our backyard buts up against a conservation area. We have had fruit flies before, but tonight I went to the kitchen and there were at least 100 of these tiny bugs in our light fixture. They are mainly dark brown to black. They have long clear wings, 3 parts to their body, and the “tail” is the biggest part of their body. They have black eyes and 2 short black antennae. The “tail” is slightly curved. They don’t look exactly like the flying ant pictures or the swarming termite pictures. The bugs I found have shorter wings. I have never seen them before. The only thing I can think of is that the light fixture is above our fruit bowl, and I bought produce at a new mom and pop store earlier today. These are gross. What are they and do we need to call an exterminator? Thanks.
i don’t know how to post a picture, but I have a good one to submit
I googled a picture of a midge and it does look very similar to that.

Save some, either preserve them in alcohol or put them in the fridge for now.
You local Cooperative Extension Service can probably tell you what they are. Try http://www.seminolecountyfl.gov/leisure/coopext/contact.asp or http://brevard.ifas.ufl.edu/contact_us.shtml

Michael Your Questions About Termite Pictures

Michael asks…

Can someone help determine what the problem is?

I don’t know what is wrong. One of the walls in my room has a bunch of needle size holes on it. They are not holes caused by putting nails or thumbtacks to hang a picture. I don’t know how they appeared. When you put your finger to touch it, the hole gets bigger because my finger went through. Can someone tell what is wrong. Does I have mold, termites or is the wall just rotting away?

Harnia Partner cropped Your Questions About Termite Pictures

admin answers:

It’s probably termites. I had the same problem, although not nearly so bad. You might look for little droppings that look like sawdust on the floor below the holes. Your house will definitely need treatment, possibly fumigation depending on the extent of infestation.

If the drywall is severely damaged, it would be best to have it replaced. When the drywall is removed, the house framing can be inspected for damage. It may be necessary to replace some studs or other wood members. Your termite company can probably make these repairs, although you might want to get another estimate from a general contractor.

Before the new drywall is hung, you might want to insulate the walls if they have not already been insulated.

I’d recommend entering into a service contract with your pest control company. They will perform an annual inspection and perform any necessary treatment as part of the contract. Plus, they will come out any time during the year when you find a problem. An infestation as bad as yours may require more than one treatment.

Sandra Your Questions About Termite Pictures

Sandra asks…

I moved to Tampa and I am trying to figure out what these mounds of grey dirt on my lawn are and how to solve.

I am trying to figure out the cause of little grey dirt / sand mounds on my lawn and how to fix the problem. Are they ants? Termites? What do I need to get rid of them and where can I get it? Can I do it myself? I don’t have a digital camera or I would post a picture. If someone has a picture of what they think it might be that would be great. Thanks.

admin answers:

Ah, the Fire Ant. It makes mounds everywhere it digs. Get some lawn spreader products from Lowes or Home Depot. The products say Fire Ant on them, and they work for one season. Your neighbor will get the ants after you use this stuff, and if you quit using it, the ants will come back.

Careful not to step on the hills in the daylight! They bite really bad.

ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR INNER VOICE AND YOU WILL NEVER BE DISAPPOINTED.

I have learned that when something is not right, wishing for it to be right is not going to happen.

The house sounds like to me it is a tear down. Would it pay you to tear down the house, and bring in a mobile house? What is the value of the land that it is current setting on? What is so special about this house that you would even consider buying it?

Framing in a tub?

The old tub and surround is in place right now. I have termite damage that I am repairing. I am outting in a jaccuzzi tub in place of the old one and wonder if I should go ahead and frame the wall in first and then set the tub or should I set the tub and then fram to the tub?

Harnia Partner cropped Your Questions About Termite Damage Repair

admin answers:

I am in the processing of putting a jacuzzi in. If it is going in a corner, then logic dictates that the back walls must be framed properly first. As for framing around the front so you could build your skirt, I did it after I installed the jacuzzi, otherwise, connecting the plumbing becomes very tedious. Also, you would need to be precisely right when it comes to the heights since you want the pressure to be on the bottom of the tub not the edges. Precision is very hard if the tub is not there already. Just be careful with the framing nailer, don’t miss and hit the tub. Make sure your structure is very strudy, otherwise, your tub will move and your grout lines will crack once you tile around it.

Richard asks…

How strict would an fha/rural developement inspection be on a house that is less than 5 years old?

I repaired obvious damage water damage to back screen door brickmold and front handrail, re-hung interior door that was off hinges and am replacing window that had been shot with a bb through outside pane of a double pane. Home has a clean termite letter and everything else is in working condition.
I have invested less than $100.00 in fixing it up.

I found what I believe to be winged termites–what do I do?

It is spring and in my 8 year old house I have found some flying ant like insects in the kitchen. I don’t want to be alarmed. My house has a cement type foundation and roof. I do have a wooden fence surrounding the exterior of my back yard but it does not look chewed up. How can I find out an affordable way to determine if I have a termite problem? How do I treat it cost effectively. My exterminator called me with a sales call that for something like $29.99 a month they will guarantee termite protection and repair any damages that may result from termites. That sounds like a lot of money…

Can you recommend something?

Harnia Partner cropped Your Questions About Termite Damage Repair

admin answers:

Before you panic any more, why not get the insect positively identified? Take one to a garden center, greenhouse, or exterminator’s office. NOT HOME DEPOT OR LOWE’S.

Thomas Your Questions About Termite Damage Repair

Thomas asks…

Do you think Im trying to be funny by asking the following question?

Do termites get constipated? Im pretty sure they do, I know for a fact they get diarriah and Ill tell you why. A few years ago I was inspecting the basement of an old house where termites were obviously in the floors and also were eating cardboard boxes .Apon examination I noticed the termites left behind a wet-putty like substance in the cardboard probably suitable for wood filler. The floors had normal termite damage on the moderate side resulting in future floor repair.I also noticed that the rafters were mostly untouched and was later told that very few termites bothered the rafters because they were oak.I believe the few termites who did consume the oak became so constipated that they just died right on the spot
